Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment to discuss EU-Canada trade agreement with An Tánaiste Leo Varadkar

21 Sep 2021, 16:10

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 22 September, with An Tánaiste Leo Varadkar TD to discuss the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

The remote meeting with the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment at 9.30am will be broadcast from Committee Room 1 of Leinster House.

Ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Maurice Quinlivan said: “Undoubtedly, for an open economy like Ireland, trade agreements such as the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada can bring substantial economic benefits.

“However, there are certain aspects of this particular trade agreement that raise substantial concerns and have sharply divided opinions in the Houses of the Oireachtas and in broader society. This direct engagement with the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment will give the Members of this Committee their first opportunity to scrutinise these key elements of the Agreement and assess their significance.”

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 1 can be viewed live on Oireachtas.ie.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
