Justice Committee to discuss Courts and Courthouses

27 Sep 2021, 18:47

The Joint Committee on Justice will engage with stakeholders on the topic of Courts and Courthouses at its meeting on, Tuesday, 28 September, at 3:30 pm in Committee Room 1.

Representatives from The Bar Council of Ireland, the National Disability Authority, Victims Support at Court, and the Courts Service and officials from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Department of Justice will be in attendance.

Committee Cathaoirleach James Lawless TD said: “The Committee looks forward to engaging with stakeholders on the issues of safety, security, and sustainability of the Courts and Courthouses and to see if they are truly fit for purpose including technological and digital advancements to allow for ongoing continued services.”

The Cathaoirleach added: “It is important that these buildings, while respecting the culture and heritage of the geographical areas, are accessible to all – and that everyone is equally able to access the Courts services, physically or otherwise. Everyone has the right to access and to know that they are safe and secure, but also not feel that they are been treated differently in doing so. We look forward to discussing these topics and having the wider debate on our Courts and Courthouses with the representatives at our meeting.”

The Joint Committee on Justice has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
