Teacher and Student Unions meet with Education Committee on Leaving Certificate Reform

The Joint Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science will resume its examination of Leaving Certificate Reform with a roundtable discussion on Reform referring specifically to Assessment Options; Key Subject Areas and Digital Learning; Access, Equality and Well Being Supports and the Irish Language and Irish Medium Education at its meeting, Tuesday, 5 October with teacher and student unions and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU).

The meeting will be broadcast from Committee Room 2 at 11 am.

Representatives from the following organisations will be in attendance:

  • Union of Students Ireland (USI)
  • Irish Second-Level Students Union (ISSU)
  • Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI)
  • Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO)
  • Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU)
  • Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI)


Speaking in advance of the meeting, Cathaoirleach, Paul Kehoe TD, said: “The Committee is focusing today on a number of the key Modules that it has identified. These are assessment options, key subject areas and digital means of learning; access, equality and wellbeing support and the Irish Language and Irish medium education.”

The Cathaoirleach added: “After a successful first meeting, the Committee looks forward to continuing this examination on what is a key issue of national importance. We will continue to engage with the key stakeholders and have already sought written submissions from a broad range of stakeholders. To ensure a meaningful examination, we are hoping to hear from all the voices involved and at this week’s meeting, we will engage with teacher and student unions and organisations. The Committee looks forward to hearing the views of the Unions that represent teachers who are an integral part of any reforms and to hear the voice of young people through their representative unions."

The Joint Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
