Committee on Budgetary Oversight to resume discussions on Indexation of Taxation and Social Protection System

2 Feb 2022, 10:00

The Committee on Budgetary Oversight will meet this evening to resume discussions on the Indexation of Taxation and Social Protection System.

The meeting at 5.30pm in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will hear from representatives from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Neasa Hourigan said: “The Committee has agreed to examine the indexation of the welfare and taxation system and this is the second of four public meetings on this topic.

“We intend to carry out in depth work on the matter and discuss areas of interest including the rationale for indexation, the creation of an indexation system, how that system would operate and the impact of indexation on budgetary sustainability. We then propose to publish a report on what we have heard.

“Last week the Committee opened our examination with a very productive engagement with Social Justice Ireland and the Nevin Economic Research Institute, and we now look forward to hearing from the ESRI on this important subject.”

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

The Committee on Budgetary Oversight is a Standing Committee of Dáil Éireann established to enhance the role of the Oireachtas in the budgetary formation process.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
