7 Mar 2022, 15:55

The Joint Committee on Justice will meet tomorrow, Tuesday March 8th 2022 to hear submissions from representatives from gambling organisations in relation to the Committee’s pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Gambling Regulation Bill.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House at 3pm.

Submissions will be taken from representatives from:

·       Colm Finlay – BetXS

·       Entain

·       Flutter Entertainment

·       Irish Bookmakers Association

·       Lottoland

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach James Lawless said: “Tomorrow’s meeting is a good opportunity to get the views of the commercial organisations that will be impacted by the Gambling Regulation Bill. The General Scheme of the Bill was published by the Government on 21st October 2021.

The purpose of this legislation is to modernise the approach to the licensing of gambling in Ireland and to set out a framework and legislative basis for the establishment of a new, independent statutory body – the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland. We will continue to highlight measures and safeguards to address problem gambling and the protection of children and seek to ensure public safety, well-being, and consumer protection is to the forefront and hope that our scrutiny of this draft legislation contributes to that aim.”

The meeting can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

The Joint Committee on Justice has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
