Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment to discuss impact of Brexit on trade in Ireland

8 Mar 2022, 14:16

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will meet tomorrow, Wednesday March 9th, to discuss the impact of Brexit on trade in Ireland.

CEO of InterTradeIreland Margaret Hearty and officials from the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment are due to appear before the meeting in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 09:30-12:30.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Maurice Quinlivan said: “It is just over two year since Britain left the European Union. While the impact of trade in Ireland has not been as catastrophic as anticipated, Ireland is more dependent on the UK market for exports as well as imports.”

“Irish businesses have been resilient and faced enormous challenges due to the pandemic but have diversified into new markets and navigated increased administrative burdens and paperwork posed by Brexit. Rising energy prices, inflation and the uncertainty surrounding the Norther Ireland protocol pose new threats for firms.”

“We look forward to hearing about the extent of the impact of Brexit on trade in Ireland, cross border trade and other related matters with representatives.”
