Foreign Affairs Committee to receive update on situation in Ukraine from the Ukrainian Ambassador Larysa Gerasko

30 May 2022, 17:46

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence will meet on Tuesday May 31st for engagement on the current situation in Ukraine.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House between 15:15-18:00.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland H.E Larysa Gerasko and Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Borysovych Yermak will address the meeting.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Charlie Flanagan said: “The conflict in Ukraine recently passed the three month mark. It has been heartening to see reports of Ukrainian refugees who came to Ireland returning home but the situation in Ukraine remains critical.

“Russian forces are continuing an intensified military offensive with heavy shelling reported in eastern and southern Ukraine. As a member of the UN Security Council, Ireland has been at the forefront of efforts to try and bring an end to this conflict through diplomatic means, to hold Russia accountable. The EU have imposed a range of sanctions on Russia but have failed to agree an embargo on Russian oil.”

“We look forward to discussing the current situation in Ukraine and Ireland and the EU’s efforts to assist them with the Ambassador and the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.”
