Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action to discuss Energy Security with Minister Ryan, Eirgrid and utilities regulator

29 Aug 2022, 15:30

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 August, to discuss Energy Security with the Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications; and Transport, Eamon Ryan TD.

The meeting at 12:00 in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will also hear from representatives of Eirgrid and the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU).

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “Concerns around Ireland’s energy security have increased since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. There are now fears of supply restrictions and even blackouts this winter.

“It is critical that Government, the CRU and the energy sector working together do everything they can to ensure that we have a secure energy supply through the winter months and beyond. It is also critical that the most vulnerable are protected and energy cost increases are kept to a minimum.

“The Committee looks forward to hearing from Minister Ryan, Eirgrid and the CRU on how the State is planning to secure energy supply, manage demand, and ensure sufficient electricity generation capacity in the months and years ahead, particularly given the supply issues and rising costs affecting our partners across Europe.”

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
