Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Niamh Smyth TD said “With the ever-changing landscape of radio and print media journalism, our Committee will use tomorrow’s meeting to engage with those impacted parties. We will look to gain their invaluable insight into what they consider necessary to build sustainability into the fluctuating media sector.

The Joint Committee met with Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, T.D. on 14th September 2022 to discuss the final report of the Future of Media Commission, the independent body established to consider how media - broadcast, print and online - can remain sustainable and resilient in delivering public service aims over the next decade.

On foot of these discussions with Minister Martin, the Committee agreed it would convene a series of meetings with media providers, civil society groups and other relevant stakeholders to discuss future business model plans and long-term vision for the media sector. A diverse, vibrant and independent media sector is essential for our wider society, our democracy, our cultural development and social cohesion, and the Committee is therefore eager to hear from a large range of voices on these issues of vital national importance.

In this meeting the Committee will hear from a wide range of stakeholders from radio, print media and journalism to hear first-hand their views and recommendations as to how this much-valued sector can be supported, protected and maintained into the next decade.”
