Social Protection Committee to discuss the Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System Bill 2022 with ICTU

6 Dec 2022, 15:55

The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands will meet on Wednesday December 7th for Pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System Bill 2022.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House between 09:30-12:30.

Representatives from Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) will attend the meeting.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Denis Naughten said: “The Committee welcomes the opportunity to continue our pre-legislative scrutiny of this Bill with representatives from ICTU.”

“As the contributory State pension stands at €253.30 a week, rather than as a percentage of previous earnings, workers without a supplementary pension experience a drop in their normal living standards in retirement.”

“Under Auto Enrolment, employees will have access to a workplace pension savings scheme which is co-funded by their employer and the State. Participation is voluntary and people can opt out of the scheme but in order to encourage workers to enrol the State will provide a top up of €1 for every €3 saved by the worker.”

“We look forward to discussing the General Scheme of the Bill and hearing ICTU’s observations on it tomorrow.”
