25 Jan 2023, 09:26

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media chaired by Deputy Niamh Smyth will meet today, Wednesday 25th January 2023 at 1:30pm. The Committee, in 2 sessions, will meet for Pre-Legislative scrutiny of the general scheme of the Registration of Short-Term Tourist Letting Bill 2022 and separately to resume discussion on the future business model plans and long-term vision for the media sector in print media and journalism.

In Session 1 from 1:30pm – 3:25pm approx, the Committee will hear from representatives from:

·       Fáilte Ireland

·       Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage

·       Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media

In Session 2 from 3:30pm – 4:30pm approx., the Committee will hear from representatives from:

·       Free Media Ireland

Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Niamh Smyth TD said “Our meeting today will be in 2 sessions with the first session focussing on the Registration of Short-Term Tourist Letting Bill 2022. This comes after the Government tasked Fáilte Ireland to develop a registration system for Short-Term Tourist Lettings in Ireland. It is expected that the system that has been developed will provide an accurate and comprehensive register of all short-term tourist properties across the country.

In the second session of today’s meeting we will continue our discussion on the future business model plan and long-term vision for the media sector with the emphasis on print media and journalism. It is the continuation of our meetings last month with the radio, print media and journalism representatives on the topic. Our Committee is eager to work with all stakeholders involved to bring tangible recommendations to the Department of Tourism, Culture, Gaeltacht, Arts, Sport and Media on the issues of vital national importance.

These meetings come on foot of discussions with Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, T.D. last year on the final report of the Future of Media Commission, the independent body established to consider how the media sector can remain sustainable and resilient in delivering public service aims over the next decade.”

The meeting at 1:30pm can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
