Joint Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport & Media meet for discussion on the future business model plans and long-term vision for the media sector

The Committee will hear from representatives from:

·       National Youth Council of Ireland

·       Age Action

·       Irish Traveller Movement

·       Independent Living Movement Ireland

Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Niamh Smyth TD said “We continue our in-depth discussion on the future business model plan and long-term vision for the media sector tomorrow with the emphasis on access and inclusion.

We will look for first-hand experience from the National Youth Council, Age Action, the Irish Traveller Movement and the Independent Living Movement on how a culture of inclusivity can be fostered to provide meaningful opportunities for all citizens to drive the development of the Irish media sector of the future.

It is essential that all media organisations recognise their role and responsibility to help to reframe how we engage our citizens at every stage of life and we look forward to hearing the views of the National Youth Council and Age Action in this respect.

From the Irish Traveller Movement we will listen to suggested ways in which Traveller visibility, broad inclusion and representation can happen in a proactive and planned way by the Public Service media.

We will ask the Independent Living Movement Ireland how they feel Media Companies and the wider media industry can reflect diversity in the production, delivery and presentation of media for disabled people in contemporary Ireland.

Our Committee has the continued determination to work with all stakeholders involved to bring tangible recommendations to the Department of Tourism, Culture, Gaeltacht, Arts, Sport and Media on the issues of vital national importance.”
