Disability Matters Committee to discuss the climate crisis and disability with representatives from the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications and Independent Living Movement Ireland

29 Mar 2023, 15:30

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will meet on Thursday March 30th on the topic of the climate crisis and disability.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 09:30 - 12:30.

The following representatives are due to appear:

Officials from Dept. of Environment, Climate and Communications, Dr Robert Mooney, Assistant Principal, Climate Engagement and Adaption Division & Hannah Gilmartin, Assistant Principal, Climate Engagement and Adaption Division

Representatives from Independent Living Movement Ireland (ILMI), Damien Walshe, Chief Executive & Peter Kearns, Onside Project Manager

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Moynihan said: “The Committee are of the view that all Government policy including climate plans must ensure inclusivity, as outlined by the UN Committees model of equality. Climate action has significant direct and indirect impact on the rights of people with disabilities as they are often the most adversely affected and the least able to access support."

“There is a need for people with disabilities to be placed at the centre of the climate action response considering their exclusion can have serious consequences and the process of disability proofing and consultation with people with disabilities and their DPOs must be further strengthened regarding national strategies – such as the Climate Action Plan to ensure that people with disabilities are included and benefit from the outcomes of any national strategy.”

“We look forward to hearing the views of representatives from Independent Living Movement Ireland and department officials on how to ensure people with disabilities are not left behind when it comes to tackling climate change.”
