Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to discuss update on homelessness with stakeholders

29 May 2023, 16:30

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 May, to discuss an update on homelessness with representatives from Simon Communities of Ireland, Threshold and Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE).

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Steven Matthews said: “The Committee published an interim report on Homelessness in April 2021 following engagements with key stakeholders, including the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive. In this report the Committee made a series of recommendations to tackle the homelessness crisis that is a blight on our country.

“This long-planned meeting for an update on the issue of homelessness and the implementation of measures to alleviate the problem has become even more important with the recent publication of the latest figures which show more than 12,000 people registered as homeless and in emergency accommodation.

“The Committee welcomes this engagement with Simon, Threshold and the DRHE, who are all at the coalface in helping individuals and families who find themselves homeless or at risk of falling into homelessness, and looks forward to hearing their updates.”

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meetings in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
