Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action to discuss decarbonisation of heat sector

12 Jun 2023, 14:45

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 12 June, at 11am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House to discuss the decarbonisation of the heat sector with representatives from eHeat Ireland.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “While Ireland is on track to meet its targets on the decarbonisation of electricity generation through renewables, much more is required in the heat sector where we are lagging behind our EU partners. This is particularly the case in the industrial sector, which makes up 40 per cent of heat demand and contributes nearly five million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

“The Climate Action Plan 2023 recognises the need for greater use of renewables and decarbonisation in heat generation and sets out realistic targets in this regard. The Committee welcomes this engagement with stakeholders and looks forward to hearing how Ireland can decarbonise its heating sector in order to meet our emissions reduction targets.”

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
