Disability Matters Committee to discuss the World Report on Hearing with the Irish Deaf Society

28 Jun 2023, 14:56

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will meet on Thursday June 29th to discuss the World Report on Hearing.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 09:30-12:30.

The following representatives are due to appear:

John Sherwin  CEO     Irish Deaf Society

Dr. John Bosco Conama         Board Director Irish Deaf Society

Elaine Grehan Advocacy manager     Irish Deaf Society

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Moynihan said: “The Irish Deaf Society is the only national Deaf-led representative organisation of the Deaf, and is recognised as a Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO) under the UNCRPD.”

“The WHO World Report on Hearing 2021 found that the majority of deaf and hard of hearing people do not have access to intervention and that timely and appropriate care can be provided through effective interventions including sign language.

This report makes it clear that including sign languages as part of planned interventions is considered cost-effective and sign languages promote effective language “development and as such have life-long benefits for all Deaf people.”

“We look forward to discussing the report in greater detail and how the Irish Deaf Society are working as a DPO to implement the recommendations in the report.”
