28 Jun 2023, 11:18

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media will meet today, Wednesday, 28th June with representatives from Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) to discuss recent revelations concerning the transparency of RTÉ’s expenditure of public funds and governance issues following the statement issued by the RTÉ Board on 22nd June 2023.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 1:30pm in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Niamh Smyth said: "This Committee wishes to reiterate its concern in relation to matters disclosed last week by the RTÉ Board regarding RTÉ’s commercial operations.

We have invited the Executive Board of RTÉ and the parties centre to this to come before our Committee to publicly outline the extent and severity of the issues involved. We will seek detail on the proposed remedial actions that it will take in order to ensure transparency and accountability to those it serves.

We expect the full cooperation of RTÉ during the course of its scrutiny of matters in respect of governance, policy, expenditure, and administration within the organisation.

The Committee is steadfast in its belief that public service broadcasting is a key pillar of Ireland’s democracy. Transparency and accountability on the part of our public service broadcasters are fundamental.

The Committee stands in solidarity with the staff base of RTÉ whose continued desire to provide value for public funding and adherence to robust principles of good governance is at the core of the organisation.”

The meeting in Committee Room 1 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
