Committee on Culture, Arts & Media meet to discuss matters relating to ongoing examination of transparency of RTÉ’s expenditure of public funds and governance following RTÉ Board statement on 22nd June 2023

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 3pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Niamh Smyth said: " Today’s Committee meeting represents a defining moment for RTÉ. There are a lot of people with high hopes for a new beginning in RTÉ so that trust can be restored in the national broadcaster, a chapter in its history of absolute openness and transparency. Already the new Director General, Kevin Bakhurst has demonstrated a welcome willingness and preparedness to be answerable to the public, licence payers and RTÉ staff.

The Committee also recognises and welcomes the fact that Mr. Tubridy and Mr. Kelly wish to fully cooperate and assist with Oireachtas Committee investigations. We believe that they have important information that will assist the Committee in its examination of these issues and could clarify a number of matters that have arisen. It is timely and certainly in the public interest that Mr. Tubridy and Mr. Kelly set out their position on these matters”

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
