The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will meet this evening to resume discussions on the Development of the Sheep Sector with representatives of Meat Industry Ireland (MII) and Bord Bia.
Ahead of the meeting at 5.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Jackie Cahill said: “Like so many parts of the agrifood sector, sheep farmers and sheep meat producers face growing challenges in terms of higher costs and lower margins. The overwhelming amount of Irish lamb meat is exported, most of which goes to the EU and UK, with small but growing international markets beyond Europe.
“The Committee welcomes this opportunity to discuss issues facing the sheep sector, in particular the price paid for lamb carcases, with Bord Bia and Meat Industry Ireland and looks forward to a wide-ranging engagement the development of the sheep sector and related matters.”
The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
