26 Sep 2023, 17:10

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will meet on Wednesday September 27th on the topic of transport accessibility.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 17:30-20:30.

The following representatives are due to appear:

  • Officials from Dept. of Transport, Garret Doocey, Assistant Secretary, Land Transport, John Boylan, Principal Officer, Public Transport & Akriti Brady, Assistant Principal, Accessibility and Rural Transport
  •  Representatives from National Transport Authority (NTA), Anne Graham, Chief Executive Officer & Hugh Creegan, Deputy Chief Executive Officer

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Moynihan said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss the progress across the built environment and transport, the delivery of inclusive climate action transport measures, accessible on-street infrastructure, island bus stops and wheelchair accessible bus stops, and transitioning licensed commercial bus services to be fully wheelchair accessible with representatives from the NTA and the Department of Transport.”

“The Department has published the National Sustainable Mobility Policy which sets out a strategic framework to 2030 for active travel and public transport journeys. The Policy is accompanied by an Action Plan to 2025, which includes the promotion of the principle of ‘Access for All’ across sustainable mobility services by, for example: equipping all bus stations with a wheelchair accessible bus bay, providing customer service officers on all inter-city trains, and expanding the number of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles in the SPSV fleet to 25%.”

“We look forward to receiving more information on the status of the action plan and how we can improve public transport and accessibility for people with disabilities.”
