Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach to discuss Authorised Push Payment Fraud with Amazon, Meta and Google

23 Oct 2023, 14:30

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 24 October, to resume discussions on Authorised Push Payment (APP) Fraud with representatives of Amazon, Google and Meta.

Ahead of the meeting at 7pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy John McGuinness said: “The Committee has previously met with representatives of the banking sector, An Garda Síochána and the Departments of Justice and Finance to discuss the growing problem of Authorised Push Payment Fraud.

“APP fraud uses sophisticated techniques to trick victims into making real-time payments to transfer funds directly into the fraudster’s bank account and is proving lucrative to crime gangs and an increasing challenge for law enforcement here in Ireland and globally.

“Cyber criminals often use fake ads on social media and other websites, many of which use images of well-known figures without their knowledge or consent, to trick people into paying for a product or service that does not exist. Another well-known scam involves phone calls to people seeking payment for services offered by Amazon or other well-known companies.

“The Committee look forward to hearing from the representatives of Amazon, Google and Meta on the efforts they are making to crack down on fake ads and other APP fraud scams, and how they are working with the Gardai and their international colleagues to combat such criminal activity.”

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
