Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to meet National Transport Authority to consider Citizens' Assembly report on Directly Elected Mayor of Dublin

23 Oct 2023, 17:15

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 24 October, to resume consideration of the Citizens' Assembly report on the Directly Elected Mayor of Dublin with representatives from the National Transport Authority.

Ahead of the meeting at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Steven Matthews said: “In its report the Citizens’ Assembly recommended to the Government and the Oireachtas the creation of a new directly elected Mayor and local government structures for Dublin. Among the issues considered was the delegation of powers over a wide range of areas, including housing, planning, transport, primary and community healthcare, policing and emergency services, and tourism.

“The Dáil has asked this Committee to consider the recommendations made by the Dublin Citizens’ Assembly and report back. We have already met with the representatives of the Eastern and Midland Regional Assembly, including senior officials from the four Dublin local authorities. The Committee now looks forward to hearing from the National Transport Authority on how the devolving of powers of transport and infrastructure to a directly elected Dublin mayor could operate.”

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
