Joint Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media meet to resume discussion on the transparency of RTÉ’s expenditure of public funds, governance issues and future funding challenges

13 Feb 2024, 16:52

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 14th February to resume discussion with representatives from Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) on the transparency of RTÉ’s expenditure of public funds, governance issues and future funding challenges facing RTÉ.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 1:30pm in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Niamh Smyth said: " We again welcome RTÉ to our meeting tomorrow and take this opportunity to reiterate our expectation that RTÉ gives its full cooperation as we examine matters of governance, policy, expenditure, and administration within the organisation.

The Committee reiterates its belief that public service broadcasting is a pillar of democracy and a public good.   It is for that reason that complete transparency and accountability on the part of our public service broadcaster remain fundamental to rebuilding public trust, and we welcome this further opportunity to hear from the Board of RTÉ on events that have unfolded, and how the broadcaster can move forward.”

The meeting in Committee Room 1 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
