Joint Committee on Disability Matters to hold full day public meeting

3 Apr 2024, 12:08

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will hold a full day public meeting entitled ‘the role of Disabled Persons Organisations and Self-advocacy to provide equal opportunities under UNCRPD implementation’ on Monday, 8 April.

This meeting will take place between 11.00am to 1pm and 2.15 to 4pm in Committee Room 1 and will be live streamed on Oireachtas TV and social channels.

Disabled Person Organisations (DPOs) and Self Advocates had a big part in designing the UNCRPD and have ‘taken their voice’ in this way. They also have a key role in consultation and monitoring of the Convention.

The Committee believe that the voice that people with disabilities have actively taken under the UNCRPD must continue to influence and inform policy and be heard by all sectors of society.

The Committee are asking DPOs, Self-Advocates and Advocates to answer one of four key questions at the public meeting.

Q1. How can DPO development be more inclusive to achieve human rights and meaningful participation for people with disabilities, across all groups, including those with complex disabilities?
Q2. How have your human rights been supported?
Q3. How can we ensure equal access and human dignity in public services?
Q4. How can we create independent living and help communities to be inclusive?

The Committee plans to hold a module of public meetings undertaking a deeper dive into implementation of the UNCRPD and meet with State Bodies.

The submissions and discussions from the public meeting on 8 April 2024 will inform this module.
