Vol. 36 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tariff on Woollen and Worsted Tissue.

asked the Minister for Finance whether any report has been received from the Tariff Commission on the application for the alteration of the tariff on imported woollen and worsted tissues by the reduction in the exemption limit; and, if not, when it is anticipated such report will be ready.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The Tariff Commission are unable at present to indicate when their report on this application will be ready.

Is the President aware that there is some urgency in this matter arising out of the fact that, owing to the reduction in the price of cloth, grades of cloth which were not intended to be exempted from the tariff are now, in fact, exempted and imported duty free and that the importation of cloth has in consequence increased very considerably to the detriment of the Irish woollen mills?

I will bring the matter to the notice of the Minister for Finance. I am not personally aware of what the Deputy says.
