Vol. 54 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Aid for Slate Quarries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the names and the locations of all slate quarries in the counties of Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford which have received during the years 1932, 1933 and 1934 (1) grants, or (2) loans from State funds or through State channels for development purposes and the particulars of such grants or loans.

In the period and counties mentioned development and exploration work at the following slate quarries was assisted by means of grants out of moneys provided for the relief of unemployment:—Carrick Slate Quarry, Killoran Slate Quarry, Townlough Slate Quarry, Farnane Slate Quarry, Clashmore Slate Quarry. No loans were made from State funds but a guarantee under the Trade Loans (Guarantee) Acts of a loan of £6,400 has been promised in respect of the Killaloe and Killoran Slate Quarries.

Is that the only loan that the Killaloe slate quarries have got?

That is not the question asked.

Can the Minister say, with regard to the question that was asked, that he has given particulars to the House as to the grants that were made?

It would be possible to give particulars of the grants. The grants were made out of moneys voted out of the funds provided for the relief of unemployment for such purposes as clearing away some of the rubbish or obstructions in the mines, or clearing a road into the mines or such other work as would permit of the development of the mines.

Will the Minister say, in connection with the Clashmore Slate Quarry, to whom the grant was given?

The Minister will not say to whom it was given?

I was not asked that question.

I asked for particulars of such grants and I made special reference to the development at the Clashmore quarry.

The Deputy should ask the question he intended to ask.

Does the Minister say he is in a position to give the information as to the amount of the grants given in each case?

In connection with the Clashmore Slate Quarry?

Yes; £300.

To whom was that grant given?

To the owners of the quarry.
