Vol. 112 No. 5

Written Answers to Questions. - Development of Offaly Limestone Quarry.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in dealing with the ground limestone scheme he will cause a survey to be made as to the possibility of developing the limestone quarry near Mount Bolus, Offaly, in conjunction with the lime burning equipment installed there by the local co-operative agricultural society, for the benefit of the surrounding Midland area.

The production of ground limestone is being undertaken in various parts of the country by private enterprise, and I do not consider it necessary at present that the State should engage in this business. In the circumstances, I do not propose to have any inspection made of the quarry to which the Deputy refers. I understand that the present holders desire to dispose of their interest, and in that event might be well advised to negotiate with any person contemplating the production of ground limestone.
