Vol. 115 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition and Division of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if any steps have been taken or are about to be taken by the Land Commission for the purpose of acquiring or resuming for distribution among uneconomic holders the holding containing about 700 acres owned by Mrs. Murray-Moore and situate at Barne, Clonmel.

Preliminary inquiries are being made in regard to these lands which, according to my information, comprise an area of only 188 acres.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (i) what the present position is regarding the rearrangement of the McCormick estate near Belmullet, and (ii) when the Land Commission contemplates striping it and giving housing grants to the tenants.

In reply to a question by the Deputy on 15th June, 1948 I indicated that this is one of numerous congested estates in the area which are noted for rearrangement as soon as circumstances permit. It is not possible to say at present when the Land Commission will be able to reach this estate.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that no fencing or improvements have so far been carried out for the tenants on the Carson estate, Muingnabo; and, if so, when the Land Commission will have these urgent improvements carried out.

The carrying out of necessary improvements works in this townland will be undertaken in connection with the rearrangement of the holdings therein. Rearrangement proposals are at present being considered but I cannot say when it will be possible to implement them as they may entail the acquisition of some untenanted land in that townland.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that owing to the refusal of the Land Commission to acquire bogs on the Crofton estate, County Leitrim, and divide them among local residents, many tenants will be deprived of all turbary rights with consequent great hardship; and, if so, whether he is prepared to recommend that this matter be reconsidered.

The Land Commission have considered the question of acquisition of these bogs and have decided to take no action in the matter. I am not aware that this decision will have the consequences stated by the Deputy.
