Vol. 119 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income-Tax Forms

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that there is a strong public feeling that income-tax forms are unduly complicated, and whether he will consider the question of their simplification.

The answer to both parts of the question is in the negative. While there is undoubtedly a degree of complexity it must be remembered that the forms have to provide for a wide variety of classes of income and of reliefs which may be claimed by taxpayers. It is necessary, on the one hand, to leave no plausible excuse for evasion and, on the other hand, to ensure that the taxpayer will be aware of all reliefs to which he may be entitled.
