Vol. 127 No. 4

Questions— Written Answers. - Compensation for Flood Damage.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that serious hardship has been caused to people resident in North Kerry, particularly in the Coil, Moyvane, Innismore, Lixnaw, Ballyline and Ballymackessey areas, due to loss of crops caused by the recent heavy flooding of the Rivers Feale and Gale and, if so, whether he will arrange to have these persons recompensed for the damage caused to their property.

I have had inquiries made in this matter and am aware that flooding did take place recently in the area referred to by the Deputy. Although some damage was caused to stored crops by the flooding, I am satisfied that the steps already taken by the farmers concerned will go far to ameliorate the position. The payment of compensation from public funds is not proposed.
