Vol. 145 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf-fired Generating Stations.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether a firm decision has been taken to erect a turf-fired generating station in the vicinity of Lanesboro; and, if so, when work on the project is to begin.

Mr. Lynch

The answer to the question is in the affirmative. A turf-fired generating station will be erected in the vicinity of Lanesboro. I have been informed by the board that work on the project has begun, that the major items of the plant have already been ordered, and that work on the site is expected to commence before the end of the present year.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware (1) that the erection of the proposed turf-fired generating station near Cahirciveen was to begin last March and be completed in 1956; (2) that the exact location does not yet seem to be established; (3) that a doubt now exists that the project will be proceeded with; and if he will state what is the cause of the delay in starting the work in this undeveloped area where there is a great deal of unemployment.

Mr. Lynch

The Deputy appears to be misinformed. I have been informed by the E.S.B. that work has begun in connection with the turf-fired generating station which will be located at Deelish Bridge, near Cahirciveen, and that the plant for the station has already been ordered. There has been no delay in starting work on the project. Planning and design work is in progress and construction work on the site has been programmed to commence this summer.
