Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Meals.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give details of the school meals scheme for necessitous children in Limerick City.

Under the Education (Provision of Meals) Acts, 1914-1930, school meals were supplied during the financial year 1953-54 in 14 schools in Limerick City. The average daily number of children receiving meals was 937; the total number of meals supplied was 182,459; the cost of the meals was £3,837 14s. 1d., and the cost of administration was £473 12s. 1d. The meals supplied consisted of a half-pint of milk with bread and butter.

One-half of the cost of food is recouped to the local authority by the Exchequer.
