Vol. 148 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the Rosses area, West Donegal.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that an official canvass of the residents of the Rosses area, County Donegal, was carried out towards the end of last year and it is hoped that the area will be considered by the board in the near future for development under the rural electrification scheme. The prospects of its being selected for development on that occasion will depend on how its returns compare with those of other areas still awaiting development in the board's Sligo district.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is proposed to extend rural electrification to the Gortahork, Falcarragh and Dunfanaghy areas of West Donegal.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that an official canvass of the residents of the Gortahork area, County Donegal, is at present in progress and that it is expected that during the summer the area will be considered by the board for development under the rural electrification scheme.

An official canvass of the residents of the Falcarragh area is expected to begin next June and it is hoped that the area will be considered by the board towards the end of the present year.

An official canvass of the residents of the Dunfanaghy area is expected to begin about October next and it is hoped that the area will be considered by the board in about 12 months' time.

I am also informed that the prospects of these areas being selected for development under the scheme when they are considered will depend to a great extent on the response of the householders during the canvasses.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the E.S.B. propose to extend supply to the Knock area in Spiddal, County Galway, and, if so, when.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the neighbourhood of Knock, County Galway, is included in the Carraroe area which has been considered by the board on a number of occasions for development under the rural electrification scheme but has not so far been selected as its returns have not compared favourably with those of other areas still awaiting development in the board's Galway district. I am also informed that the area will be considered again by the board but that its prospects of selection for development will depend largely on a further improvement in the percentage of householders willing to take supply.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what areas are scheduled by the E.S.B. for rural electrification in West Cork in the immediate future.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the districts in West Cork that have been approved for attention under the rural electrification scheme for the year 1955-56.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 16 and 17 together.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the areas of Inishannon, Kilbrittain, Ballingeary and Inchigeela in West Cork have recently been selected by the board for development under the rural electrification scheme and that it is hoped to commence construction work in these areas at intervals during the coming months. I am also informed that work is at present in progress in the Bweeng area of West Cork.

Depending on the results of official canvasses, other areas may also come before the board for consideration during the year 1955-56.

Seán Mac Eochagáin

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the townlands of Camus Uachtair, Camus Eighter and Lettermuckoo.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that these townlands are included in an area in which a partial canvass of the residents was carried out early last year but that the results were not sufficiently good to warrant the completion of the work. If any interested persons feel that a better response would now be obtained they should communicate with the board, who will advise them of the action to be taken.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the Kilcavan, Tomacork, Ballingate and Raheengraney areas in County Wicklow.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Tomacork area, County Wicklow, which includes Kilcavan, Ballingate and Raheengraney, has recently been selected by the board for development under the rural electrification scheme, and it is expected that construction work will commence in the area during the summer.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the Rathdangan, Knockananna and Askinagap areas in County Wicklow.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that it is intended to carry out in the near future an official canvass of the residents of the Knockananna area, County Wicklow, which includes Rathdangan and Askinagap, and that it is expected that the area will be considered by the board for development under the rural electrification scheme towards the end of summer. I am also informed that the prospects of the area being selected for development will depend to a great extent on the response of the residents during the official canvass.
