Vol. 164 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Safeguards against Oil and Petrol Fumes.

asked the Minister for Health whether he will take steps to preserve the health of city and town residents against disease or illness which may be caused by fumes from oil and petrol driven motor vehicles.

In the absence of any concrete evidence which would demonstrate that disease or illness is being caused in cities and towns in Ireland by fumes from motor vehicles, I do not propose to take any special steps in this matter. I would, however, draw the attention of the Deputy to the provisions of Article 62 of the Mechanically Propelled Vehicles (Construction, Equipment and Use) Order, 1934, which require mechanically propelled vehicles to be so maintained as to minimise the emission of smoke, visible vapour and certain other substances which might cause damage to person or property in consequence of any harmful content therein.
