Vol. 168 No. 6

Written Answers. - Forestry Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of each forestry centre (grouping the centres in counties) as at 31st December, 1957, the number of forestry workers employed and the basic wage in each case; and if he will give corresponding particulars in respect of a recent date since the new bonus scheme came into operation.

Introduction of the incentive bonus scheme mentioned by the Deputy commenced at the beginning of April, 1958. It will be applied progressively, forest by forest. By now, it has been introduced at five forests. The time-rate wage structure of forestry labourers for the entire country was rationalised, however, as from the 1st January, 1958, to facilitate introduction of the incentive bonus scheme.

The following statement sets out the position now and at the last pay day in December, 1957.

NOTES:

(1) The present basic weekly rates as set out are those obtaining for time-work, i.e., they exclude additional earnings under the Incentive Bonus Scheme.

(2) In Counties Dublin and Kildare, the present basic rates are lower than the former rates. Any employee who enjoyed the former rates retains them in the form of a guarantee which, when the Incentive Bonus Scheme has been applied at his forest, guarantees total earnings not lower than the previous rate.
