Vol. 169 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cong Forestry Employees.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that men were laid off in Cong forest recently; and if he will state the number, and the reasons for their disemployment.

Seven men were laid off at Cong forest recently because the volume of work available for the current season was not sufficient to permit of their continued employment.

This reduction was primarily due to the institution of standing timber sales. It is understood that the timber merchants should be able to employ the men laid off.

Could the Minister say if married men were laid off while single men were retained?

I cannot say, but I can tell the Deputy that the merchants in the area who purchased the standing timber advertised for men in the local Press and the Department's officials are satisfied that most, if not all, of the men who were left off will secure alternative employment with these merchants.

Would the Minister look into the circumstances of the men who were left off and, if possible, restore to work those men who are married and have family responsibilities?

I shall inquire if there is any anomaly in regard to the choice of men.
