Vol. 184 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - O.E.C.D. and Council of Europe: Parliamentary Link.

23.

Major de Valera

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the Government would approve of proposals in the Interim Committee of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, now meeting in Paris, that a parliamentary link should be established between the O.E.C.D. and the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe, along the lines suggested in Recommendation 245, and, in particular, that O.E.C.D. should send an annual report to the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Recommendation No. 245 of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe is among the matters which are at present being studied in the Preparatory Committee of the Conference on the Reorganisation of O.E.E.C. The committee is to report by 10th November and this report will be considered at a meeting of Ministers which will probably take place during the first half of December.

Pending receipt and examination of the report of the Preparatory Committee, I should not like to express a definite opinion about the Recommendation of the Consultative Assembly. The Deputy may rest assured, however, that the recommendation and the views of the Preparatory Committee thereon will receive the most careful consideration of the Government.

I would see no objection to the suggestion that the O.E.C.D. send an annual report to the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe.
