Vol. 189 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hackney Licences.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the number of hackney licences which are current in each county, (b) the number of vehicles covered by those licences, (c) the conditions under which the licences are granted, and (d) if he will consider the desirability of refusing further issue of licences.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate the reply, which includes a tabular statement, with the Official Report.

(b) Since each licence issued by the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána relates to a single vehicle the number of vehicles is the same as that shown in respect of licences at (a) above.

(c) The licensing of hackneys is a matter for the Commissioner and his powers and duties in this regard are set out in Part VII of the Road Traffic Act, 1933, and the regulations made thereunder. I would refer the Deputy to Sections 86 and 92 of the Act in particular, and to the Small Public. Service Vehicle Regulations, 1936 and 1956 and the Small Public Service Vehicles (Amendment) Regulations, 1960.

(d) I have no power to instruct the Commissioner not to issue any further hackney licences.
