Vol. 228 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accidents at County Dublin Road Junction.

36.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the serious danger to pedestrians, especially schoolchildren, attempting to cross the Stillorgan Road at the junction of the road with Seafield Road, Dublin because of the very heavy traffic flow; and if he will state in respect of traffic accidents at the junction over the past five years (a) how many were fatal, (b) how many resulted in injuries to persons, and (c) how many caused damage to vehicles and property.

I am aware that the heavy traffic on the main road between Donnybrook and Cabinteely has been under study by the Garda and the local authority and that traffic lights with pedestrian facilities are to be erected at four points thereon. The intersection mentioned is not one of these, but the new lights will ensure that the traffic flow along the whole length of the road will be halted at intervals, thus easing the position for pedestrians and traffic at intervening points.

In the past five years at the intersection mentioned there were two fatal accidents, five accidents in which persons were injured and 15 in which damage was caused to vehicles or property.

Fairly substantial.
