Vol. 312 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Remedial Education.

198.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the serious problem which has arisen in respect of the education of pupils requiring remedial education at present attending classes under the Dún Laoghaire VEC; if he is aware of a shortage of suitable remedial teachers to provide the teaching necessary; and if he will take action to provide the necessary teachers.

Remedial education in second-level schools is provided by teachers, who in addition to having the normal qualifications required of teachers in such schools, are deemed to be competent to undertake remedial education, usually as a result of attendance at special in-service course organised by my Department. I understand that there are three such teachers already in the service of the Dún Laoghaire VEC and that a further teachers is at present attending an in-service course.

The allocation of teachers to the Borough of Dún Laoghaire Vocational Education Committee for the current service is currently being reviewed in the light of additional particulars provided by the committee.
