Vol. 342 No. 7

Written Answers. - Limerick Redundancies.

677.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he is aware of the redundancies which will take place at Cement Ltd., Limerick; the action he proposes to take in the matter; and if alternative employment will be secured for these workers.

I am aware of the proposals of Irish Cement Limited to lay off a number of its workers at Limerick. I understand the company has found it necessary to cut back on production and reduce manning levels because of very depressed market conditions for its product.

As the Deputy will appreciate, the manning levels at the plant are primarily a matter for the management of the company.

The Industrial Development Authority are continuing their efforts to secure further new industrial projects that would provide increased employment opportunities in the Limerick area. In addition a number of recently established firms are at present taking on further workers.
