Vol. 369 No. 11

Written Answers. - County Cavan Lake.

99.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of deterioration in the condition of the water in Lough Sheelin; and the plans he has to improve the quality of the water.

I am aware that there has been a deterioration in the condition of Lough Sheelin. This can be attributed largely to the abnormal weather conditions during this and the previous summer.

Cavan County Council who have statutory responsibility for water pollution control in the area, have issued notices under the Local Government (Water Pollution) Act, 1977, which prohibit spreading of slurry in the catchment between 15 November 1986 and 15 February 1987 and which also impose restrictions on spreading in the months immediately before and after this period. The council applied similar controls in 1985-86.

I am requesting the council to review the situation of Lough Sheelin, to consider what other measures may be needed to protect the lake and to advise me of their conclusions.
