Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - Causes of Suicide.

241.

asked the Minister for Health his views on whether there is a need for greater research into the causes of the suicide problem in this country; and if he will set up new intervention procedures to reduce this unwarranted loss of life.

There is always a need for more research into identifying causes of death particularly deaths which are preventable by identification of categories of persons at risk and the ready availability of appropriate intervention procedures. In order to assist further research into suicides, my Department is currently reviewing the procedures for reporting of suicides to ensure the full and accurate reporting of all such deaths.

The question of intervention procedures to reduce the number of suicides is one to which there is no ready answer. The development of community-based psychiatric services is making these services more accessible to the public and should ensure earlier contact with people at risk. However, it is too early yet to judge the success of these new services in preventing suicides. The Deputy will be aware, of course, of the Samaritans and the valuable contribution they make in helping people who feel depressed or suicidal.
