Vol. 384 No. 2

Written Answers. - Extradition Procedure.

89.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the operation of the extradition procedures between Ireland and the United Kingdom; if he has satisfied himself with same; and if he has any proposals for a review of same.

Extradition between Ireland and the United Kingdom is governed by Part III of the Extradition Act, 1965, as amended.

Section 6 of the Extradition (Amendment) Act, 1987, provides that the Government shall, as soon as may be after the 1st day of January in each year beginning with the year 1989 make a report to each House of the Oireachtas on the operation in the preceding year of Part III of the 1965 Act. The review proper will commence immediately after the end of the year but the necessary monitoring of the operation of Part III has been in progress throughout this year. The report to each House of the Oireachtas will be made as soon as possible in the New Year.

In view of the specific legal provision on the matter, it would be inappropriate for me to pre-empt the Government's report by making a statement on the subject at this stage.
