Vol. 391 No. 7

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Payments.

57.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in paying disability benefit to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare who was deemed unfit for work by her doctor on 26 June, 1989 and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The person concerned claimed disability benefit from 26 June 1989. As she was found capable of work on her most recent previous claim, which was disallowed from 8 March 1989 and which was based on a related incapacity, payment was suspended pending an examination by a medical referee of the Department.

Arrangements have been made to have her examined by a different medical referee as soon as possible. Her entitlement to benefit will then be decided in the light of the medical referee's report.

Mr. Browne

(Wexford) asked the Minister for Social Welfare when an old age non-contributory pension will be paid to persons (details supplied) in County Wexford; and the reason for the delay in reaching a decision.

The person concerned applied for an old age non-contributory pension on 30 January 1989. Her husband has not, as yet, reached the qualifying age for pension.

Inquiries have proved to be protracted in this case as the local social welfare officer has been seeking to establish the exact means of the person concerned. These details have only recently been provided by her and confirmation is awaited from her bank. On receipt of this, her claim will be referred to a deciding officer for decision and she will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible.

59.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the present position regarding a disability benefit claim in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Waterford.

The person concerned was paid disability benefit to 15 June 1989 after which date payment was disallowed following an examination by a medical referee who expressed the opinion that he was capable of work.

He appealed against the disallowance and arrangements have been made to have him examined by a different medical referee as soon as possible. His entitlement to benefit will then be reviewed in the light of the medical referee's report.
