Vol. 398 No. 10

Written Answers. - Execution of American Prisoner.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

70 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will take action to request the United State of America authorities not to proceed with the execution of Dalton Prejean who is to be executed in Louisiana on 18 May 1990 and who was a juvenile at the time his crime was committed in 1977.

On 17 May I sent an appeal to the Governor of Louisiana who was the final authority in this matter. I asked him, on humanitarian grounds, to commute the death sentence passed on Mr. Prejean. I regret to have to say that Mr. Prejean was executed on 18 May.
