Question:

88 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education when the full list of inservice courses on the new syllabus content and methodology as discussed with the Teachers' Union of Ireland and the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland in May 1989 will be issued to schools; and if full substitution arrangements, travel and subsistence will be available for all teachers on these courses.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 87 and 88 together.

Inservice training for teachers involved in the new junior certificate programme is provided by way of a series of one-day courses, which are organised nationwide. Three such courses have been held to date and they have dealt mainly with syllabus content and methodology. It is my intention to provide at least two one-day courses per school year up to 1992. As I have already announced in the House the next two courses will be held in late January or early February and in March 1991.

Travelling expenses are payable to course participants. Subsistence is in the form of a midday meal, which is provided at course centres. Substitution costs are not payable by my Department; school managers may close their schools on course days, if they deem it necessary, for the purpose of allowing their teachers to attend the courses.
