Vol. 405 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Haulage Regulations.

Ivan Yates

Question:

99 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals to improve the enforcement of regulations relating to the Irish road haulage sector.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that every effort is being made by the force to enforce the road traffic and road transport legislation in relation to trucks and other heavy goods vehicles to the maximum extent consistent with the need to meet the many other competing demands on Garda services. I am informed by the Garda authorities that particular emphasis is placed by the force in this regard on such as matters as road freight licences, certificates of road worthiness, tachographs, vehicle defects, speeding, and insurance regulations. I have also been assured by the Garda authorities that enforcement of the laws in question will continue to be given high priority.

Functions in relation to the enforcement of the relevant legislation are also exercised by transport officers appointed under the Road Transport Act, 1986, who come within the sphere of responsibility of the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications.
