Vol. 416 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waterford Regional Sports Centre Grant.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

82 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education if he will provide a supplementary grant to Waterford Corporation as requested to complete the present development at Kilbarry Regional Sports Centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Waterford was designated by the Government as the location for a regional sports centre and a 400 metre, eight lane synthetic running track to full international standards, together with the development of the infield area, fencing, car parking area and access road has been completed with grant aid of £0.5 million from my Department. These facilities complement the existing indoor sports centre, tennis courts and 18 hole pitch and putt course provided some years ago.

Proposals for the next phase of their overall development, comprising dressing room facilities, storage accommodation and fixed terrace spectator seating adjoining the existing athletic track, for which an additional grant of £0.2 million has been allocated, are under consideration by my Department.

Following examination of these proposals my Department will be in communication with Waterford Corporation. It is not possible at this stage to provide additional funding for the project.
