Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - Ophthalmic Services for Primary Students.

Richard Bruton

Question:

196 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that children diagnosed from the primary school clinic, to be in need of a referral to an eye specialist, are having to wait for up to one year for attention; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The provision of ophthalmic services is the responsibility of the relevant health board and I have asked each health board to report to me on this matter.

However, I can assure the Deputy that where the diagnosis is medically urgent, treatment will be provided as a matter of urgency.

If the Deputy has a particular case(s) in mind, and he lets me have the details I will have the matter investigated.
